Mindfulness is a relaxed state of awareness that observes both our inner world of thoughts, feelings and sensations, and the outer world of constantly changing phenomena without trying to control anything.

It is widely recognised as a powerful tool that can help us enhance appreciation of life and manage stress.

Mindfulness will not eliminate pressures but enables a more calm response that can benefit heart, head and body. It is now recommended by the medical profession to alleviate symptoms of stress and is used in schools, business and sport.

Other reported benefits include: achieving balance and resilience at work and home; becoming more creative; recognising, slowing down or stopping automatic and habitual reactions; responding more effectively to difficult situations.

Think about how Mindfulness could support you, your work with children, young people, families and work colleagues.

Safety Net is running an 8 week mindfulness course specifically for health and social care practitioners working with families.

The course comprises of 8 x 2 hour sessions on Mondays, from 5.30pm to 7.30 pm. The first six sessions run from 6th February 2017 to 13th March 2017 inclusive, there will then be two further sessions on 24th April and 15th May 2017. The first six sessions are for practitioners to experience and explore the benefits of mindfulness for themselves, the final two sessions  focus on using mindfulness within the work context and using and passing on the skills to families.

Course Facilitator- Wendy Guest

Wendy has many years of experience in training practitioners and facilitating groups in Protective Behaviours, a life skills and safety awareness programme, within community health services and for Safety Net.  Many of the skills needed to keep ourselves feeling safe resonate strongly with mindfulness practices.

On a personal level, Wendy has been drawn to develop more understanding and practice of mindfulness for herself and really values the ongoing emotional and physical wellbeing that it gives her.

Wendy has been trained by the Hawn Foundation and delivers ‘MindUp’ training to teachers and schools to enable them to implement mindful practices within the school curriculum. She has trained with the SMART foundation as a mindfulness coach and facilitator, and now facilitates mindfulness groups in Brighton & Hove.
